Safety when running

In my years as a runner, I have tried to prioritize my safety when completing my morning miles. But the reality is it’s not always easy to have perfect safety conditions when you run. For example, it is hard to run in a well-lit area when you live in a rural location. And when have to be at work at 6 or 7 am, the only free time you are able to run is in the darkness at 4:30 or 5 am.

I have lived in suburbs, cities, and somewhat rural areas. My running routes have been diverse, each one giving me a different sense of security. I have created my own safety system based on where I have lived or currently live. Two things that have remained constant depending on my living location: 1 – always running with my cell phone and 2 – NOT running with headphones.

⭐️ City living – texted my best friend when I left and when I returned from my run. *loved starting my day with best friend vibes*

⭐️ Suburb & rural living – run with my flashlight and reflective vest so other cars/drivers can see me. If you need to run on the road, run in the opposite direction of traffic so you can visualize oncoming traffic to modify if needed.

Running safety is always a topic that is not talked about enough. We all have our routes/routines and the idea that something can happen to us can be a distant thought. This post is your reminder not to take your safety lightly! You GET to run and move your body everyday! Respect yourself by respecting your safety!

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

✅ Use tracking apps (AllTrails Lifeline or RoadID) on your phone so your chosen contacts will be notified if no movement is detected, or if you go off course, etc.

✅ DITCH THE HEADPHONES ‼️ Stay present in the moment and with your surroundings

✅ Run with your keys and phone close by – these items can be used to fight back!

✅ Don’t hesitate to call emergency services (911 in USA) EVEN IF YOU THINK IT IS NOT SERIOUS ENOUGH!
