UNLOCK THE HIDDEN SECRETS OF RUNNING IN THE HEAT WITH THESE TIPS:
It is time to throw away that winter gear and break out the sunnies, tanks, and sunscreen! When running, you either love the heat or hate it. I haven’t met anyone who is somewhere in the middle. Tell me if you are! I want to meet you!
I hate running in the heat. It makes me feel miserable. But it is a necessary thing almost any where on the globe. Did you know that our bodies can acclimatize to the heat? It can actually improve your fitness to help you meet that big fall or spring racing goal. Here are some tips to help you handle the heat this summer:
✅ Run in the early morning or evening when the temperatures are generally at their coolest. I love my early morning runs! 🌅
✅ Try to avoid long runs or high intensity runs.
✅ Start your workouts slower than usual – Every 5 degree bump up in temperature above 60 degrees F (approx. 15 degrees C), slow your pace by about 30 seconds per mile/kilometer.
✅ Know the medications you take – some may cause dehydration, like antihistamines. Don’t take them before your run!
✅ Drink often and a lot. Add in a sports drink to your mix to replace electrolytes
✅ Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!🕶️
It can take about 2 weeks to acclimatize to the heat. Your body will learn to decrease your core temperature and lower your heart rate. It is pretty incredible what our bodies can do! Respect it, be patient with it and give it grace!
