I NEVER DO THIS RIGHT! That’s what I always told myself when I first started running outdoors!
How hard is it to find the right amount of clothing to wear? Are you always too hot or too cold?
I have perfected the decision making process for choosing outdoor running attire. Follow this method and you will be comfortable! No more wasting precious time figuring out if you should take the gloves or not!
RULE ⚠️ Always dress 20 degrees warmer than the outdoor temperature. For example, if it’s 60 degrees F (around 15C) outside, dress like it’s 80 degrees F (around 26C). Exclude all wind factors and wind chill; stick to temperature only. Seems scary but trust me, it works!
For reference, my hands and feet are always cold. I end up wearing gloves when it’s 50-53 degrees F (or 10-11 degrees C). However, I know plenty of runners who leave the gloves behind when temperatures rise above 50 degrees F (10 degrees C).
- Above 60 degrees F or 15 C – shorts, tank top or just sports bra
- 53-59 degrees F or 11-15 C – shorts and a tshirt
- 40-52 degrees F or 4-11 C – long pants or 3/4 length pants, long sleeved shirt, gloves
- 32-39 degrees F or 0-3 C – long pants, long sleeved shirt, headband or hat to cover ears, gloves
- Below 30 degrees F or -1 C – long pants, long sleeved shirt with sweatshirt over top, headband and hat, gloves.
No matter the temperature, always bring fuel or water on your runs. As you follow this guide, you will easily find what works best for you!
